What Light (Simple) Mode Actually Hides — and Why None of It Costs Money
Light mode trims KasbPro down to short forms and the essentials. It is not a limited free trial of a bigger paid product — it is the same free plan, just quieter. Here is exactly what changes.
Software that shows you less usually does it for one of two reasons: either it is protecting you from complexity you don't need yet, or it is holding something back until you pay. Light mode in KasbPro is the first kind, and this is worth demonstrating rather than just asserting, because the second kind is common enough that skepticism is reasonable.
What Light mode actually is
Light mode — labeled "Light (Simple)" in Settings — is the default starting point. It does two things, and only two things:
- Shortens entry forms to the fields you actually need to record a transaction, hiding tax, branch, project and other detail fields you probably don't have a use for on day one.
- Starts your menu with the essentials: Income, Expenses, Accounts, Transfers, Contacts, Documents, Inventory, and basic Reports. Payroll, CRM, Recurring, Projects and Roles stay out of the way until you want them.
That is the entire effect. It does not reduce your transaction limit — there isn't one, on either mode. It does not cap your team size. It does not restrict which reports you can pull. It changes what's on screen, not what you're allowed to do.
The test that actually matters: can you get everything back
If Light mode were a deliberately crippled free tier, turning a hidden feature back on would be difficult, or would cost something, or would nudge you toward upgrading. None of that happens. Open Settings → Features, switch on CRM, or Payroll, or any other module, and it appears in your menu immediately — no plan change, no payment screen, no confirmation that you're "upgrading." You can also turn on one specific thing without switching your whole account to Standard mode — Light mode plus CRM turned on individually is a completely normal, supported configuration.
The reverse is just as true: switch to Standard mode, decide you don't want Projects cluttering your sidebar, turn it off. Nothing you entered in Projects is deleted. It is just not shown until you turn it back on.
Why a mode like this exists at all
A founder recording their first sale does not need to see a tax field, a branch selector, and a project dropdown before they can log "customer paid me $50." Every one of those fields is a small decision, and small decisions compound into a form that feels like it was built for an accountant, not for the person actually running the shop.
Light mode is an answer to that specific problem: get the essential transaction types in front of you with the shortest possible form, and let everything else stay invisible until you have an actual reason to need it — which, for a lot of small businesses, might be never, and that is fine.
Who should stay on Light mode
If your business is genuinely simple — you sell something, you have some expenses, maybe you track stock — Light mode is not a lesser version of the product you'll eventually "graduate" from. It might be the right mode for your business permanently. There is no reason to switch to Standard mode just because it exists, the same way there is no reason to turn on every setting in an app you use daily just because the setting is there.
Who should switch, or turn on individual modules
The signal to add something is a real need showing up, not a sense that you "should" have more features on. If you hire your first employee, turn on Payroll. If you start negotiating deals rather than just taking simple orders, turn on CRM. Neither of those requires switching your whole account to Standard — add exactly what you need, when you need it.
What this has nothing to do with
To be direct about what actually costs money: AI features (the AI Accountant, receipt scanning, an AI CRM coach), document uploads with Google Drive sync, Advanced Reports (Budget vs Actual, Tax/VAT, Branch/Project P&L), the Draft Audit Report pack, and automated backups (an unattended monthly email export, or a weekly/monthly snapshot to your Drive) are Pro, at $49/year — on either mode. Generating that same export yourself, on demand, is not on this list — that stays free regardless of mode or plan. Being on Light mode does not block any of the Pro items any more than switching to Standard mode unlocks them for free. Mode and plan are separate settings, and mixing them up is the one genuinely confusing part of an otherwise simple system.
